A new faze is spreading on TikTok: using Rice Krispies Treat as sa pre workout energy boost. According to @Ko0maaa on TikTok, “ Rice Krispies are supposed to give you an insane pump. He shared with his fans that after he ate the Rice Krispies he set a personal record for his weighted squats. However, what is the science behind this simple snack and the pros and cons of the pre workout?

Ingredients

Let’s look at the ingredients of Rice Krispie Treats to start off. Puffed rice cereal is a great example of a simple carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are a main source of energy for the body and simple carbohydradrates specifically digest quickly. Carbohydrates are great to power through your workout. However, fiber is a a very important component for pre-workout meal and Rice Krispie treats do not include any of it. Fiber prevents gastrointestinal issues during a workout. The other ingredients include marshmallow and other corn syrups and sugars. Although these ingredients aren’t the best long term, they are fast sources of energy. Although sugar is a carbohydrates, they should be consumed in moderation before a workout. Therefore, if you want to go through your workout, Rice Krispie Treats are a mediocre fuel.

Alternatives and Conclusion

There are much better alternatives to a pre workout snack that includes both fiber and carbohydrates. Some examples are yoghurt, nuts, or even a banana. Although Rice Krispie Treats have their benefits, athletes can get the same effects buy eating a slice of toast. Continue eating your Rice Krispie Treats if that is what you enjoy but there are always better options.
